Peabody Energy Honors Germany’s Trianel With Clean Coal Award for Achieving Best Emissions Performance

AMSTERDAM, June 9 – Peabody Energy today honored Germany’s Trianel Kohlekraftwerk Lünen GmbH & Co KG (Trianel) and its Lünen plant with an Advanced Energy for Life Clean Coal Award recognizing global leadership in deploying high-efficiency clean coal technologies that deliver ultra-low emissions.

Presented at the Power-Gen Europe Awards in Amsterdam, the honor recognizes the best 2014 environmental performance among European coal-fueled power plants based on self-nominated emissions data for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and heat rate, the measure of a plant’s efficiency.

Trianel’s 750 megawatt ultra-supercritical power plant in Lünen, Germany, has an efficiency rate of approximately 46 percent, which is among the best in the world.  The plant also is equipped with a collection of emission controls to reduce SO2, NOx and particulates to very low levels.  Municipal utility companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are joint-owners of theplant, which has been in operation since 2013 and delivers electricity to more than 1.6 million households.

“Peabody has long been a proponent of advancing clean energy solutions from coal that drive progress in global living standards, strong economies and clean environment,” said Peabody Energy President and Chief Executive Officer Glenn Kellow.  “We are proud to raise the global dialogue about the benefits of clean coal by honoring projects like Trianel’s Lünen, a state-of-the-art plant that is important for accelerating greater deployment of highly efficient global energy systems.”

Coal fuels 40 percent of the world’s electricity and is on pace to surpass oil as the world’s largest energy source in the next several years.  Approximately one new 500 megawatt power plant comes on line around the world approximately every three days, and the majority of these plants are being deployed with high-efficiency supercritical technology.

These honors follow last month’s Advanced Energy for Life awards in New Delhi, India, where two coal-fueled power plants were recognized for their leadership in deploying clean coal technologies.  The AEFL awards were created in 2014 to recognize the cleanest U.S. coal plants and were expanded in 2015 to honor the cleanest coal plants in the world.  This year Peabody will honor coal-fueled power plants for their environmental performance in key regions including Europe, India, East Asia (excluding China) and North America.

Regional winners will be recognized at multiple Power-Gen International events around the world, and the global winner will be announced at the Power-Gen International conference in Las Vegas this December.  Click here for more information on previous award recipients and the awards nomination process.
